What new consumer research means for product development, reformulation, and competitive advantage in Canada’s packaged food market.
Original Research.
Independent Analysis.
Practical Implications.
A national survey of 1,000 Canadian grocery shoppers was conducted by the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University under the supervision of Sylvain Charlebois.
The goal? Discover how Canadian consumers are responding to the new FOP nutrition labels and what it means for manufacturers.
Key Findings
The FOP label is already changing the shopping decision.
The research shows that Canadian shoppers have quickly incorporated FOP labels into everyday grocery decisions. Awareness and understanding are high, and over half are changing their behaviour because of the symbols.
Key Findings
The strongest impact is at trial.
FOP labels influence both new and existing customer groups, but the strongest effect occurs before trial. The implications for manufacturers were clear: The label can influence trial; but taste, texture, value and product performance determine if they return.
Key Findings
What matters most to consumers, when, and where?
Consumers want better nutrition, but they still have other key considerations. The research provides insight into whether consumers are willing to pay more, how different customer segments respond, and what food & beverage categories are most impacted.
FOP pressure is not evenly distributed.
